Jurgen Melzer of Austria defeated Leonardo Mayer in straight sets , 7-6(4) 6-3, in Tokyo, Japan .
Tennis is a game of much skill and specialised playing techniques. At this level, players are highly experienced and demonstrate exceptional talent. However, this does not always guarantee their success. This match was a particularly tight encounter: Melzer served extremely well and with his swinging lefty serve it was always going to be difficult to break him.
Mayer was unable to convert 3 break point opportunities in the match and it proved the difference, Mayer saved 6/7 break points but the one Melzer took was enough to win him the match.
Although this was a disappointing result for Mayer, he played well and gave a credible performance throughout the match. The great thing about watching players of this standard is that, even when they aren’t doing so well, you can always count on the fans to show their support. Mayer’s fans were certainly enjoying themselves throughout this match, joining in with the action like they were playing bingo games watching their favourite band play live. You could see that they were always having fun, and encouraging they Mayer throughout. No doubt they’ll be looking forward to seeing a return to his success during his next game.
